The classic Petanque game is triples. When playing triples, the opposing teams (les équipes) have three players (les joueurs) and each player plays two boules. Traditionally, each player has a specific role — the pointer (le pointeur), the middle (le milieu), and the shooter (le tireur). Ideally the middle is able to both point and shoot. The best teams in the world consist of players all of whom can both point and shoot (with amazing skill)
